Brush FAQs

I don't like soft bristles - can't I have medium or hard?

Since forever, dentists have advised against using medium or hard bristles as they can damage teeth and gums. We can't help you do that! Soft bristles are 100% effective, and although at first they can feel unusual for people who are used to medium or hard bristles, we find that people usually get used to them within a couple of weeks.

Where are your brushes made?

Our manufacturing plant is located near a sustainable bamboo source in Ningbo, China. We have audited the plant, in person and on-location, for both quality and ethics. The staff at our plant are all adults, and are paid 20% over the industry average.

Why are your bristles Nylon and not a biodegradable material?

We would love to be able to use a more environmentally friendly material for our bristles. However currently there is no material available, anywhere in the world, that performs well enough as a toothbrush bristle filament. Bioplastic materials wear out after a couple of brushes, and the other option is boar hair. Yuck!

We are working on creating the world's first dentally approved bioplastic bristle - and so part of the proceeds of every subscription go toward the toothbrush industry one day being able to move away from Nylon.

I have a toddler - can I use the kids brush?

Toddlers often use their toothbrush as a teething aid by chewing it vigourously. Bamboo isn't recommended as a teething aid due to its potential to break or splinter if put under abnormal stress.

I have teenagers - is the adult brush suitable?

Yes, we recommend the adult brush for anyone over 10 years old.

Is bamboo really sustainable?

Bamboo grows up to 3.5 feet per day - making it one of the most renewable resources on the planet. It doesn’t require petrochemicals or artificial pesticides to grow, making it both cost-effective and toxin-free. And it even sequesters carbon dioxide and produces 35% more oxygen that an equivalent stand of trees.

How should I dispose of the brushes once I'm done?

We recommend removing the bristles with pliers, and recycling or discarding them - then putting the handle in your compost or garden where it will naturally decompose.

How will we know whose brush is whose?

Each brush in every delivery has different coloured bristles - so you'll always be able to tell whose brush is whose.
